I recently signed up for Blogging 101 and 201 courses through the Daily Post. I’m not new to blogging (I’ve got posts on Joy’s Teaspoon and Please Advise plus I work at a legal blogging firm) but I’ve never managed my own blog or my own site. In part, because I was a little gun shy and also because I wasn’t sure what to talk about.
I’m still struggling with what to talk about.
Initially, I started this site because I wanted to learn more about WordPress. I was applying for a job at LexBlog which is a WordPress company and thought it would help me understand what they do there. I got the job, I learned a whole bunch about WordPress from the LexBlog perspective but I still can barely manage my own site.
What I did learn about blogging was that in order to be really effective, you have to come from a place of passion and authority. That is where the best blogging lives – that intersection is key. If you’re not an expert now then research and write. Over time you’ll turn yourself into an expert.
Awesome. So now where do I go? I am passionate about:
- pit bulls
- social media
- positive body image messaging for women
I am not an expert in any of them. I’m also not an expert in WordPress although I’m a lot closer than when I started this site. I keep thinking this might be a good place to start building up a portfolio of what I am capable of as a writer, a blogger, a social media coach, a human being but I can’t quite land on what it is this site should be when it grows up.
Maybe by the end of the Blogging 101 and 201 courses I’ll know what to do with this site. Maybe not. But I’m excited to learn and see where that takes me.
How am I doing so far? Are you part of the Blogging 101 challenge? What are you learning?
